I’ve been thinking a lot about food.

Throughout the pandemic, I’ve found myself appreciating a new recipe or savoring the process of tweaking a dish to improve the taste. I was focused on improving my skills in the kitchen, but also tying in my skills as a photographer. As I delved deeper into the storytelling of food, I’ve listened to hours of The Splendid Table, rewatched episodes of Chef’s Table, and studied countless photographers’ websites as I’ve reverse-engineered how they made the images.

Food photography is a genre that I’ve participated in from time to time. From business stories focusing on a cook to food and drink-focused product images, I’ve found myself making pictures of the people, the processes, and the products that are a part of the food and drink industry. As I reflected on these past experiences, I am somewhat surprised I didn’t notice the passion and enjoyment that I found in this subject area.

The expressions of culture, artistry, and care that can come through a dish are powerful. Like many things in life, the more one pays attention to the details, the richer the experience. So, I started to photograph food that we were cooking at home and also items that I found at some of my favorite local establishments. Soon after, I started reaching out to some of my favorite establishments. I’ve been able to spend some time in kitchens and at restaurants making pictures of delicious food and drink in South Bend and nearby.
