I was pleased to see one of my favorite sports photograph receive a first place award in the SPJ's Top of the Rockies contest this year.

In the notes, the judge wrote, "I love that this frame captures exertion - not the winning, or the losing, or the funny-looking catch or the agony of an injury. The photographer perfectly captures what is so relatable about sports in the first place - everyone can feel this way, no matter what sport or how well they played."

I think that this critique hits home with what I appreciated about the moment and the photo too. It showcases a feeling. This feeling is relatable and falls outside the bounds of the competition.
